Q - What is STCW95?
A - Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping convention establishes a baseline standard for the training and education of seafarers throughout the world. By placing an emphasis on quality control and competence-based training, it establishes a structure that can ensure not only that the required standard is set, but that it’s met. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) convention provides the minimum standards of qualifications required by crew members at various levels depending upon vessel size. All crew involved in any safety or muster must complete the STCW 95 recognized 4 part basic safety training course consisting of: 1 day Personal Survival Techniques, 2 days Fire fighting and Fire Prevention, 1 day Elementary First Aid and 1 day Personal Safety and Social Responsibility. These courses are available throughout the world. To find a training provider near you, simply go to your preferred search engine and type “STCW 95 4 part basic safety training” and your nearest city. We also provide a list of Maritime Colleges and Yacht Training Institutions on our “Links” page.

Q - Do I have to hold an STCW 95 recognized 4 part basic safety training certificate in order to get a job at sea?
A - No not always, however it’s quickly becoming a prerequisite for employment on most super yachts and commercial vessels i.e. cruise ships. If you’re serious about a career at sea, it’s a must!

Q - How much should I expect to pay for the STCW 95 recognized 4 part basic safety training course?
A - The cost of the course will vary greatly depending on where you take it, however you should expect to pay between $800 -$ 1400 USD.

Q - I’ve noticed some jobs advertised on your website limit applications to certain nationalities, isn’t that discrimination?
A - No, each vessel is guided by standards and regulations set by the flag to which it’s registered under. For Example a ship that is registered under the USA flag can only employ US citizens. Visas may also limit employment, for example a non US registered vessel that enters the United States must ensure all of its crew have valid US visas, either B1/B2 or C1D depending on whether the vessel is commercial or private.

Q - What should I include on my CV?
A - Your CV should be clear and to the point, no more than 2 pages and should include contact information, a recent photo (clear and professional), work experience listed in chronological order starting with your most recent position, qualifications, education and referees.

Q - What should be included in my Contract of Employment?
A - Salary, accommodation conditions (shared or private cabin), leave entitlement, flight/travel allowance, length of assignment.
